Hello “Terrible Twos”

Dear Lucas,

Again, you’re actually three when I wrote this but… Welcome to two and all the ups and “terrible two” downs that come with it! When I looked up the meaning of toddler, this is what I found: “A toddler is a child between the ages of one and three. The toddler years are a time of great cognitive, emotional and social development.” As a parent, it was my job to help you navigate the tide of strong emotions you experienced during this year, which was not always an easy task as at this age you are driven to assert yourself, communicate your likes and dislikes, and to act independently. You may have taken a few bites out of my sanity along the way, but it was another fun year filled with new and exciting milestones and adventures!

Uncle David and Aunt Alicia come for a visit

Cooking with Nana and Kinsley

Your second trip to the dentist when you didn’t embarrass me

You’ve become quite the kickball player

Your first 4th of July parade

That time at the 4th of July parade when you stood in front of the giant water slide
for what seemed like hours and got soaked – you loved every minute of it

Your first time in a foam pit

Your first visit to a zoo – you were much more interested in pushing the stroller than the animals

Your fly dance moves

Camping with the Campbell’s

That time you threw a tantrum because I was trying to poison you again

And then that time I won the food fight and you realized that I was not trying to poison you

Your first organized soccer team. Bad idea. All you wanted to do was kick the ball off on your own.

Potty training

One of your favorite things to do… run away from Mommy

Getting into the holiday spirit

Riding the Zilker Zephyr

Gingerbread house building with Nana

Still the cutest toddler in the whole wide world (photo by Tishy Photography)

But also a devilishly naughty one! (photo by Tishy Photography)

That time you decided that Santa is only cool in the story books

School Christmas party and you surprised me by eating a cupcake

Again… surprising Mommy and Daddy by eating something new

Your first bike

Your first time on a trampoline

First pair of underwear – Mickey Mouse of course

My little golfer

You’ve become quite the little helper – when you get to do what it is you want to do

Singing your ABC’s to Aunt Lele

Easter with all of your grandparents

Learning to play baseball

Big boy bed

Aunt La La is sooooo cool!

Happy three years old!

So, how to sum up year two to three? You’re stinking cute. Your curiosity about the world was and still is infectious! And while you certainly got into trouble, your mishaps felt accidental, making them easier to forgive. It has also been a year of violent emotions and opposite extremes. You want exactly what you want, when you want it. Everything has to be done just so. Everything has to be in the right place at the right time and done the right way. You go back and forth endlessly between two extremes – “I will – I won’t”, “I want – I don’t want it”, “Go out – stay in.” You give orders. You must make the decisions. If you decide, “mommy do”, daddy cannot be accepted as substitute and vice versa. If you decide, “me do”, then no one is allowed to help you, no matter what. You’re killing me smalls.

It’s been a big year of many changes and through it all you took it in stride. Mommy and Daddy are still standing. Thank you for being patient with Mommy and Daddy. Thank you for understanding that Mommy and Daddy don’t know what we’re doing and that we are doing our best. Thank you for not disowning us and dropping us off at the local fire station. Oh wait… that’s where we thought about dropping you! Ha ha. Just kidding. Sort of.

Looking back I realize that the terrible twos get a bad rap. It’s not your fault that you don’t come equipped with the right tools to figure out the world. As I said before, it was my job to help you navigate the tide of strong emotions you experienced during this year and for the most part I think your Daddy and I did a pretty good job. You know why? Because one day you woke up and seemed to have it all together. Welcome to three my little sweet potato!
